Microsoft, Apple, Google accelerate push to eliminate passwords

Microsoft, Apple and Google – all longtime proponents of doing away with passwords for authentication purposes – are throwing their support behind standards developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that could eliminate the passphrases completely. Sometime this year or early in 2023, the three companies will begin offering expanded capabilities in their devices that will make it easier for organizations and individuals to adopt passwordless technologies like a device PIN or the scanning of their fingerprint or face, the FIDO – short for Fast Identity Online – Alliance announced Thursday.
